Fast & Loose vs. Large & Finished

I recently attended a presentation by one of my favorite painters, Tim Horn. He noted that he often ends up doing two versions of favorite scenes: one small version, often painted on site, and a larger, more formal version, painted in the studio.

“Funny thing,” he said. “I almost always like the smaller version better.”

So I tried the same experiment. I had completed an 8 x 10 version of “Suiting Up” from a photo I took on Kapalua beach. Then I did a 30 x 40 inch version. What do you think? (Click the images to enlarge.)

Seems as though each painting has its strengths.

(BTW, the larger version will be included in a Lamorinda Art Alliance show at Moraga Country Club, July 14 – Sept. 15. Reception Thursday, July 24, 5 – 7 p.m.)
